The area has been designated a National Park. The pony population has fallen from tens of thousands to about 800 now. The breed has a docile temperament and is popular with children. The breed has a history on the moor dating back hundreds of years. There are two organisations dedicated to the breed: Dartmoor Pony Society (pedigree register) and the Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust.
