(Above image is a capture of Kelso town centre.) This evening, I am posting information on the town of Kelso in the Scottish Borders   region. Kelso is about 44 miles S.E. of Edinburgh and impresses as a pleasant place. The town is well endowed with hotels, shops and restaurants. Fishing the River Tweed at Kelso   Summary facts and information: Population 5639. Earliest record of the name is 'Calkou' which is linked to the word for chalk. The name roughly translates as 'lime hill'. Has the largest cobbled market square in Scotland. Most of the town centre dates from around 1750 onwards, i.e. Georgian and Victorian. The impressive Town Hall was constructed in 1816. Situated close to the River Tweed. The bridge over the Tweed dates from 1754; this acted as a catalyst to development of the town via improved communications. The Scottish Borders covers an area of 1800 square miles in southern Scotland with the city of Edinburgh and Lothians to the north, Dumfries and Galloway to the west, and Northumberland in northern England to the south.The region is characterised by rolling hills, narrow roads, omnipresent sheep, rivers and streams and seasonal colours.Here, farming is a major industry.
