This evening, I am posting information on Dartmoor Ponies, an endangered breed of hardy equines found on Dartmoor in southern England.

Summary information as follows:

  • Dartmoor is a high elevation landscape in the county of Devon which extends to 954 sq.km ( 368 sq. miles). The area has been designated a National Park.
  • The pony population has fallen from tens of thousands to about 800 now.
  • The breed has a docile temperament and is popular with children.
  • The breed has a history on the moor dating back hundreds of years.
  • There are two organisations dedicated to the breed: Dartmoor Pony Society (pedigree register) and the Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust.
