Billy Connolly Murals
This evening I am posting images and information on certain murals celebrating famous Glaswegian comedian, Billy Connolly
.In commemoration of Billy Connolly’s 75th birthday BBC Scotland commissioned three portraits of the comedian by top Scottish artists. In conjunction with Glasgow City Council representations of these original works were then installed around the city
Connolly is also known as the ‘Big Yin’. This world famous entertainer once worked as a welder in Glasgow shipyards before he went on to develop a career as a musician, comedian and actor.
Now Sir Billy, the retired comedian is currently battling Parkinson's disease.
A social housing organisation commissioned the 20ft by 16ft artwork immediately below which cost GBP45,000 (USD72,000) and which is now positioned on the wall of a residential block in Anderston, close to where Connolly was born.
The mural is the work of Andy Scott who has produced other pieces of public art around Glasgow.
Originating with pencil sketches, the mural was made from about 1.5 miles of 0.24 inch steel chopped into small pieces.
Overall, an impressive piece of art work but not easy to find.
Here is another mural which I encountered by chance today. It is located to the rear of the St. Enoch shopping centre in central Glasgow. This seems to date from Connolly's 75th birthday. Not easy to photograph due to height and proximity of a construction site surrounded by barriers.
Will post other mural(s) when I can locates same.
