Loch Lomond

Loch Lomond is located about 25 miles N.W. of Glasgow and is one of Scotland's most popular visitor destinations. More information:

  • Ranked by surface area this loch (lake) is the largest expanse of freshwater not only in Scotland but the entire region of Great Britain.Length is 22.6 miles, width up to 5 miles and maximum depth 502 feet.
  • It is the centrepiece of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park and surrounded by mountainous landscapes including Ben Lomond. ('Ben' means hill or mountain in Gaelic.)

  •  Straddles the geological border between the Highlands and Lowlands regions.The fault passes through the loch and is manifested in the islands of Inchmurrin, Creinch, Torrinch and Inchcailloch.

  •  The area is a haven for wildlife. More than a quarter of Britain’s plant species thrive here plus a wide array of birds and mammals.
Here is a listing of important sites and places of interest:
  • Small town of Balloch on southern tip of the Loch. Here is a railway station, marina, boat trips, lodgings, pubs and restaurants.

  • Balloch Castle Country Park. The site spans 200 acres which includes walled gardens, nature trails and walking trails.

  • Small village of Aldochlay with quaint cottages and boating facilities.(Limited parking facilities in summer.)
  • Popular village of Luss with historic village houses, pier, boat trips, historic church and Viking era burial.Due to a combination of location and facilities Luss experiences high volumes of visitors during the summer months.
  • Village of Tarbet at northern end of Loch. Here is a large hotel plus a hub for boat trips.

  • On the eastern side is Inversnaid with its waterfall, Rowardennan, Ben Lomond (mountain reaching 3194 feet)., Conic Hill (1175 feet) and the village of Balmaha.

There is much to appeal to a wide range of interests with activities including hiking, cycling, climbing, fishing, boating, canoeing, photography and swimming (in summer).


A section of the West Highland Way hiking trial runs along the eastern side of the Loch.

The Loch Lomond region is associated with Clan Colquhoun and Scottish legend, Rob Roy MacGregor.

Surrounding the loch is a wide range of hotels and visitor accommodation. Due to popularity, booking early is recommended.
