This evening, I am reprising a trip on the Langollen Canal in North Wales. Location is about 50 miles south of Liverpool in NW England.

First, we drove about four miles along a mountainous back road to the town of Llangollen (in North Wales) which has been a tourist destination for about 200 years. Llangollen is very tourist orientated and is a good base for touring the local region. The town straddles the River Dee, is adjacent to the popular Llangollen Canal and features a steam train which runs over a short distance of track.

Our focus was the canal. We joined a two-hour canal boat trip which chugged through the local scenery at a sedate pace with journey culminating in a crossing of the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, a stunning piece of engineering dating from 1795-1805 which transports the canal over the valley of the River Dee at a height of 38 metres (125 feet). The Aqueduct is the work of famous engineer, Thomas Telford (1757-1834).

About one mile downstream from Pontcysyllte is another stupendous structure which is known as the Cefn Railway Viaduct.This sits on the edge of  Ty Mawr Country Park.

At conclusion of the boat trip we were transported back to Llangollen by motor coach, thus concluding a very satisfying day in North Wales.

Glen Quaich, one of Scotland's best backroads tour routes

This afternoon, I am reporting the route of Glen Quaich in Central Scotland. This is a scenic, single track road which is usually closed to traffic in winter. The route covers about twelve miles and runs between the villages of Amulree and Kenmore on the northern tip of Loch Tay in Perthshire. Depending on time of year it is possible to encounter low lying snow, many sheep, grouse and other exceptional opportunities for photography. Incidentally, Quaich means a drinking cup. Fort Augustus, a popular visitor site on southern tip of Loch Ness

Loch Ness from flight of locks at Fort Augustus, Scottish Highlands This evening, I am posting information on Fort Augustus, a busy tourist village on the southern tip of Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. Summary information on Fort Augustus as follows:- Population about 650 persons. Distance, about 160 miles from Edinburgh and 35 miles from Inverness entailing journey times of 3.5 hours and 1 hour respectively. Well endowed with hotels and other accommodation plus shops, restaurants and visitor attractions. From here visitors can avail of boat trips on Loch Ness. Home to an impressive flight of five locks on the Caledonian Canal. Latter dates from 1822 and is now primarily used by pleasure boats.
