This evening, I am focusing on an unusual example of Scottish domestic architecture as manifested in the Kirkstyle Cottages, Coatbridge, Scotland. The quasi-Tudor style would, perhaps, be more fitting in an English village and appears somewhat incongruous in the former industrial setting of Coatbridge. Key facts and information:

  • Designed by local architect Thomas Smith (1862-1941) for the Rev. Sholto Douglas, probably as homes for estate employees.
  • Built 1904 with additions in 1913.
  • Comprise two pairs of single storey and attic, Tudor-style symmetrical, semi-detached cottages.
  • Half timbered and harled with slate roofs.
  • Multi-pane timber casement windows.
  • Each pair of cottages comprises a central block with two oriels at ground floor, flanked by single windows.
  • Category B listed heritage buildings since 1993.
