Cherington, Warwickshire

Introduction

By special request I am posting information on the charming (English) Cotswold village of Cherington.

Information on Cherington

  • A quiet, rural village with population of about 214.
  • Name is probably of Saxon origin and means 'village with a church'. This suggests a community established sometime in the second half of the first millennium.
  • Not usually associated with tourism although there are hiking trails and a relatively new whisky distillery at nearby Stourton.
  • No shops or school.
  • The River Stour runs through the valley in which the village is situated.
  • Located about 16 miles south of Stratford-upon-Avon, and 5 miles from Shipston-on-Stour.

Images below span a period of nearly 50 years.Should anyone wish to add other relevant images then please email same to: n.cole67@ntlworld.com

Former pub (the Bear?) c. 1965. This was the home of actor Hugh Griffith (1912-1980) who appeared in over 100 theatre, film, and television productions in a career that spanned over 40 years, notably Ben-Hur in 1959.
