Historic Sites Near Inverness
Introduction
This evening, I am reprising a one-day private tour of popular historic sites near Inverness, northern Scotland.
Information on the Tour Itinerary
Clans Burial Marker at Culloden Battlefield
First, we departed Inverness city and embarked on a trip encompassing three local historic sites, viz:
- First to Culloden Battlefield. Here in April 1746 occurred the last battle on British soil when a British ‘Redcoat’; Army under General Cumberland defeated a force of Jacobites under Bonnie Prince Charlie and thereby finally disposed of the Jacobite threat to the thrones of England and Scotland. We walked around the entire site including Jacobite lines, Redcoat lines and burial markers of the defeated clans. We also visited the excellent Visitor Centre with detailed information on events leading up to the battle and the battle itself.

- Final visit of the day was Fort George, a massive military facility built post Battle of Culloden, around 1760. The fort is still, occupied by the British military but scheduled to end the link in 2032.
